PPPoE Billing

Set up PPPoE subscriber billing with RADIUS authentication and automatic speed enforcement.

Overview

LALABill PPPoE billing integrates with MikroTik RADIUS to provide centralized subscriber management. When a subscriber connects via PPPoE, MikroTik queries LALABill RADIUS for authentication. Approved subscribers receive their speed profile automatically.

What problem does it solve?

Managing PPPoE subscribers manually on MikroTik means creating PPPoE secrets for each customer, updating speed limits by hand, and tracking expiry dates in spreadsheets. This does not scale beyond a few dozen subscribers.

How it works

Configure your MikroTik PPPoE server to use LALABill as its RADIUS server. When a subscriber dials in, MikroTik sends the credentials to LALABill. If the subscriber has an active service, LALABill returns an accept response with rate-limit attributes matching their package. On expiry, connections are rejected until renewal.

Requirements

  • MikroTik router with PPPoE server configured
  • WireGuard VPN connection to LALABill
  • RADIUS configured on the MikroTik pointing to LALABill

Step-by-step setup

  1. Connect your MikroTik

Onboard your MikroTik router to LALABill using the WireGuard onboarding script.

  2. Configure RADIUS on MikroTik

Add LALABill as a RADIUS server on your MikroTik. Use the VPN tunnel IP and shared secret from LALABill settings.

  3. Create speed packages

Define your speed tiers in LALABill with upload/download limits and monthly pricing.

  4. Add subscribers

Create customer accounts and assign PPPoE credentials and packages through the LALABill dashboard.

  5. Activate services

When a customer pays, activate their service. The next PPPoE connection will be authenticated with the correct speed profile.

Configuration guide

RADIUS settings

Configure the RADIUS server address (WireGuard tunnel IP), port (1812/1813), and shared secret in your MikroTik RADIUS client settings.

Speed profiles

Each package defines upload and download speed limits sent as RADIUS rate-limit attributes. MikroTik applies these as dynamic queues.

Benefits

Centralized management

Manage all PPPoE subscribers from one dashboard instead of individual router configs.

Automatic enforcement

Speed limits and access control are enforced automatically through RADIUS.

Instant changes

Package upgrades, downgrades, and suspensions take effect on the next connection.

Troubleshooting

Subscriber cannot connect

Verify the customer has an active service in LALABill. Check that RADIUS is configured correctly on MikroTik (correct IP, port, shared secret). Ensure the WireGuard tunnel is up.

Speed limits not applied

Confirm the package has upload/download speeds defined. Check MikroTik RADIUS incoming settings. Verify rate-limit attributes are being sent (check RADIUS log in LALABill).

Frequently asked questions

Yes. LALABill supports both billing models. You can run hotspot for prepaid customers and PPPoE for postpaid subscribers on the same MikroTik.
LALABill rejects the next PPPoE connection attempt. The subscriber sees a connection error and must renew their service to reconnect.
